The Art Work of
M.L. Barbani
In October 1987, Barbani's wife gave him a set of oil paints and brushes, and saying, "Happy Birthday Matt, you were always interested in art, go and try it". After a long delay, he bought a book on oil painting - he began, and the bug bit.
In November 1988 Barbani entered a prestigious Treasury of Art juried show in Northern Virginia. Two of his four submitted paintings were selected.
With personal encouragement from David A. Leffel, and Gregg Kreutz, both then New York successful artists, M.L. Barbani continues to paint all life's subjects.
In 1990, a Barbani painting was selected for the Executive Office of Economic Advisors - The White House - Washington, DC.
M.L. Barbani now retired to Washington, NC and joined The Inner Banks Artisans Center in December 2009. He changed his art style to 'Impressionism' and continues to paint and write novels.
His published works include, an Autobiography, 'The Way It Was', and two Action/Adventure novels titled, 'The Transformation Formula', published in 2004, and its sequel 'Paradise Lost', in 2007. His 4th published book (anthology) of two action/adventure stories, The Ring Conspiracy and The Candlelight Conspiracy are published under the book title, The Revenge Option.
Matt is also the Editor of the Pamlico Writer's Group monthly newsletter here in Washington, N.C.

Matt,
We thought you might like to see a photo of our kids with their Christmas gifts! Steve also gave each of them a letter to go with the picture. Needless to say, there was not a dry eye! I am glad we happened upon your booth that day last summer!
Warm regards,

Fishing Lessons
For my children
While your mother and I were in Washington North Carolina, right after the family vacation, your mother was visiting- I was along for the walk - various art galleries. The proprietor of one of these art galleries had painted a picture of a man and a child fishing in the surf. I have often wondered how people can just stand and stare at a picture as if it was talking to them. Personally I think those people are weird but c'est la vie! This picture spoke to me, because it brought back memories, good memories, ones that are worth considering and dwelling on. Pure ones, that needed no excuses for why, no other reason to create then just the pure joy of the experience. Then without a moment's hesitation, no negotiation with your mother, I contracted with the artist to paint two more pictures, so I had one for each of you. The artist was a nice elderly gentleman. This picture's value will only grow in response to the value you place on the memories it holds. You all hold the same letter because of the many things I have taught you; I taught each of you how to fish. Fishing is one thing that I taught you not so you could be a better person or get better grades, etc. No, I taught you how to fish just because I enjoy fishing and I wanted to enjoy fishing with you.
You and I have been fishing together for a very long time. I am sure that I was the one who handed you the fishing rod and let you reel in your first fish. Fishing has nothing to do with life or death, except from the perspective of the fish of course, fishing could feed you but will most likely never support you. Fishing was just hanging out together and enjoying life. A quiet time on the beach standing 50 feet apart, but together, enjoying life together.
I am beginning to feel the end of the road so to speak. I have no premonitions or dreams about some close and sudden end but life is starting to look different or at least I am looking at it from new perspectives. I think it is safe to say I am over fifty percent through and I start to ask myself questions like "did I prepare you well enough". I think over the next year I am going to make a real effort to do more fishing and if you would like to go, I would enjoy that very much.
I want this painting of you and me standing on the beach together to always remind you of a few things. The first I love you very much. I am not good at saying it - your mother tells me that is not my love language -but it is never-the-less absolute truth. The second that there are many good things, I taught you, like fishing. Lastly, that there are also many things that I should not have taught you or failed to teach you. What I hope you learned is how to find the wisdom to make good decisions and then have courage to act on those decisions.
I miss standing on the beach with you, teaching you, watching you catch fish or not catch fish. It really had nothing to do with fish. We were just father and child enjoying life together and that is exactly what I want to keep doing, enjoying life together.
That is what I heard when I pondered the picture you now own, that you and I could stand in the crashing surf together, throw hooks to unseen fish and hope together. That together we could both learn something about life and each other from the simple act of fishing together and enjoying exactly who we are and what we each dream, together.
